Abstract

Cigarette smoke exposure contains toxic substances such as nicotine and various harmful compounds that can induce oxidative stress and disrupt immune regulation. This condition stimulates inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses, including changes in Interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels. Butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) contains flavonoids and anthocyanins with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may modulate inflammatory responses caused by cigarette smoke exposure. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of butterfly pea flower on IL-10 levels in male Wistar rats exposed to cigarette smoke. This was an experimental study using a post-test only control group design involving 30 male Wistar rats divided into five groups. Treatments were administered for 14 days. On day 15, blood samples were collected and IL-10 levels were measured using ELISA. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Post-Hoc LSD test. The mean IL-10 levels were 0.350 ng/mL (normal control), 0.818 ng/mL (negative control), 0.566 ng/mL (aspirin), 0.806 ng/mL (200 mg/200gBW), and 0.961 ng/mL (400 mg/200gBW). One-Way ANOVA showed significant differences among groups (p < 0.05). The results showed significant differences among groups (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that ethanol extract of Clitoria ternatea affects IL-10 levels in male Wistar rats exposed to cigarette smoke.
